Euddán had no idea how they would remove Lady Petrification from Vounée.

A shiver rippled through him. Tales of the Dragon Wars echoed in his mind. Six dark and deadly monsters. Tyaan, Dragon of Illumination; Wuufay, the Dragoness of Illusion, Rhay’szii, Dragoness of Warmth; Thooj, Dragon of Breath; Bithin, Dragon of Blood; and Iith’jau, Dragoness of Flesh. They were the largest and most dangerous of all the dragons. Their leaders. The scars of that dread conflict littered the world from massive craters to the Blighted Woods to the Cut that had split apart the land. The Scar in the Bhooh Empire and even the forest they walked through were festering wounds.

“We’ll figure this out, Vounée,” he said, becoming aware of the darkenbeasts crowding around the light barrier. He had water in his belly, almost too much. He felt bloated. “For now, though, we have to stay ahead of that woman.”

“Yeah, she seems intense,” Vounée said. There was something like admiration in her voice. Even awe. “If she wasn’t trying to kill you, she’d be like a hero in a story with that spear.”

“She’s a friend of your father’s,” Euddán muttered, breaking the hug. “Not very heroic.”

Her cheeks darkened with a blush. “I know that.” She stepped back, looking calmer. “I was just saying she was like a hero, not that she was a hero.” She bent down and picked up the waterskins that were slowly being carried away by the lazy current of the creek. “Where are we going?”

“We’ll hit the Echo Mountains soon. There are passes through them.”

“Supposedly,” said Vounée. “No one uses them.”

“But people do go up into the mountains from the other side. There are mines. Even a monastery. We just have to find our way over. Then we can get to Doforá or Wordoshá on the coast. We can find a ship in one of those cities that can take us across the Winding Strait to Beubbáz.”

That was a cousin kingdom to Jeurmiveum. Both were Shoeumese countries, sharing a common ancestry. Five races of humans had fled Paradise. For the most part, the Shoeumese had followed Ishéen Stonetooth and his wife to these lands on the northwestern edge of the word, but stories said there were kingdoms far to the south and west that were also settled by their race.

“Okay,” she said as she tied her waterskins to her pack.

They stepped across the creek and climbed out of the valley. He felt refreshed while his mind worked. He sorted through all manner of legends. There were many sites in the world where strange things happened. There was the Amberfang in the Long Spine Mountains the drake-men of Rhii Szitsiib climbed to become drakeknights, a fearsome order of warriors who protected their lands. There was said to be a crater called the Navel where all manner of mutated plants and animals flourished. A place so dangerous the Shunzaudz Horde’s bravest warriors would not enter. He’d heard legends of a lake that if you bathed in it, you would gain insight on your path .
